A painting of three turkeys near a deer shed by a Maple Grove artist will be featured on Minnesota's 2012 Wild Turkey Stamp, the state Department of Natural Resources announced Wednesday.

The design by Steven Trofka, 46, was chosen from among 24 entries in the DNR-sponsored contest. It's Trofka's first entry in this category. He was a finalist in the DNR's 2010 Minnesota trout and salmon design contest.

An artist whose work is selected for a Minnesota fish or wildlife stamp receives no compensation from the DNR but retains reproduction and marketing rights.

The Minnesota Wild Turkey Stamp was authorized by the 1996 Legislature at the request of turkey hunters. Stamp revenue is used for development, restoration, maintenance and preservation of wild turkey habitat in Minnesota.

The total price of a wild turkey hunting license is $23, with $5 of that representing the turkey stamp.
